The Australian Government's A$385 million National Low Emissions Coal Initiative (NLECI) is to accelerate the development and deployment of technologies that will reduce emissions from coal use. A major focus of the initiative is on the research, demonstration and deployment of low-emission coal technologies involving carbon capture and storage. It is managed by the Australian Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism.
EXPERIENCE:
NLECI fund has been allocated accordingly:
A$50 million to a post-combustion capture demonstration plant in New South Wales,
A$50 million to a post-combustion capture demonstration project in Victoria that uses brown coal,
A$50 million to a coal gasification research facility in Queensland being jointly developed by both the Australian and Queensland governments and industry,
A$75 million for a national low emissions coal research program, including A$25 million to support low emission coal research by CSIRO,
A$50 million for the Callide fully integrated Oxyfuel demonstration project in Queensland,
A$20 million to fund the Australia-China Joint Coordination Group on Clean Coal Technology (JCG); and
A$50 million to support the implementation of the National Carbon Mapping and Infrastructure Plan developed by the Carbon Storage Taskforce.
