ecoEnergy - Part of Natural Resources Canada's ecoACTION program
STATUS:
In Process
TIME FRAME Start:
2008
TIME FRAME End:
2009
DESCRIPTION:
The ecoEnergy Technology Initiative is a C$230 million investment in science and technology by the Government of Canada to accelerate the development in clean energy. It is a part of ecoAction, the government's actions towards clean air and greenhouse gas emission reductions.
Carbon capture and storage is one of eight high-priority technology areas in which the program invests. Its aim is to advance technologies to capture carbon dioxide from a variety of sources such as coal-fired boilers, gasification systems and oil sands operations. Additionally, the Initiative is to advance technologies and methodologies for safe geological sequestration of CO2.
EcoEnergy, with the government of the province of Alberta, established a carbon capture and storage taskforce in March, 2007.
EXPERIENCE:
In October 2007 the Genesee FEED study became the first project to be supported by the federal government's ecoENERGY Technology initiative.
In March 2009, the Government of Canada invited proponents of seven projects to begin negotiations toward formal contribution agreements to set the conditions for funding in amounts ranging from C$3 million to C$30 million per project. These are the:
Heartland Area Redwater Project
Integrate Carbon Capture and Enhanced Oil Recovery Project
Fort Nelson Exploratory Project
Pioneer Project
Belle Plaine Integrated Polygeneration CCS Project
CO2 Injection in Heavy Oil Reservoirs
Alberta Saline Aquifer Project (ASAP)/Genesee Post-Combustion Demonstration Plant
