CCS Bełchatów Project
Nominators: Poland (lead), European Commission, and United States
Recognized by the CSLF at its Warsaw meeting in October 2010, this is a large-scale project, located in central Poland, which will demonstrate commercial-scale CO2 capture, transport and storage at a new lignite-fired power plant unit. The project will demonstrate the full CCS value chain, including capture, transport, and safe geological storage of up to 1.8 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Project components include identification of potential issues related to intellectual property, storage site selection, permitting, facilities and pipeline construction, and public engagement activities. Success of this project will expedite commercialization of CCS for large-scale fossil fuel power generation.
