ZeroGenNominators: Australia (lead) and Japan Recognized by the CSLF at its London Ministerial meeting in October 2009, this is a large-scale project aimed at constructing and operating a fully-integrated, commercial IGCC power station with CCS in central Queensland, Australia. The project will initially capture 65% of CO2 emissions, moving towards 90% as the project proceeds, and will include transport and storage in underground saline aquifers of at least two million tonnes per year of CO2 for the expected 30 year life of project. The goals of the project are to prove the effectiveness, safety and permanence of CO2 geosequestration; validate the engineering, economic, and environmental viability of advanced, coal-based, low-emission technologies so that similar industrial-scale facilities will be bankable technically; and to standardize technologies and protocols for CO2 measuring, monitoring and verification of storage.
